EnglishBase.com is the unofficial site of the ICT SIG of IATEFL Hungary. Its main aim is to provide a platform for teachers of English to interact with each other: exchange ideas, share success stories and concerns, ask for help, find solutions and, last but not least, learn about each other.

Thank you, Elek! I am very happy to have this wonderful and personal resource.
Another thought: how do you manage your various web 2.0 teaching activities ? Time management is crucial here. Do you do all your blog email etc communication with students in one block of time or scatter it around the week? What’s the “ideal” solution?
I don’t think there’s an “ideal” solution but I hope others will chime in as well. A lot depends on your individual circumstances – in my case, I scatter it around the day (not the week…) as I’m online most of the time. However, I’d say that posting a response to a blog post or an e-mail a week later is less than ideal – your students’ online lives move much faster than this, and even four days can seem almost like an eternity. But I think it’s all right to set up a routine and tell your students, for example “look here, I have time to respond to your online stuff on Tuesdays and Fridays”, because then they will know when to expect a response.
(Mary, do you think it would be all right to “upgrade” your question and put it into a post where I would also copy my response above? I could then tag it for easier access and we could start a “Discussions” category. It would also be a bit more organised that way. Let me know if I can proceed with this. By the way, I’ve also given you author privileges and this is what I’m planning to do with all commenters interested in posting anything, so please feel free to go ahead.)
Yes, Mary, please, write a post about it!!
(I try and do everything right-away-on-the-spot-in-the-lesson-in-the-mood. Otherwise I would forget half of what I wanted. I teach mostly small groups and one-on-one, I’m always online and I use lots of online and authentic resources.)
Naturally, Elek, that would be the intelligent solution: to put everything related to time mgt in one post. I just started out here at “about” because I was in a big hurry and didn’t bother to think whether I should post or what. Would you be so kind as to group all the related comments, too? MS
Guess what I did first thing after getting off the night train? Okay, besides catching a few hours of sleep… that’s right. I registered here.
I find it a wonderful idea to have a website for sharing ideas for using ICT and the problems we might face while tackling this new/old animal. The talk you gave, Elek, was a breath of fresh air indeed.
Looking forward to seeing how this might develop.
Thank you very much for your comment! I’m glad you liked my talk – now let’s see how we can continue the same thing here online :).
